the new fit video is seeming more and more forced with every new youtube episode that drops. the filming is shottie (rob-o is shooting most of the footage so far...) none of the riders seem genuinely excited about the project, everyone knows chase would rather shoot for the new empire vid (dave parrick directing like woah!) it was probably a bad idea to give a video (with so much hype surrounding it anyways) a deadline before you've even rounded up the whole team or even have a professional to shoot it.

word on the street. chase's new frame is going to cost $420 because of how post-weld baked the frame gets.

after seeing hollywood pump out resident evil(s), doom, silent hill, max payne, etc. i've been waiting patiently for a half-life adaptation. i mean valve must be holding the rights pretty close, the full half-life (everyone who's played the series knows by "full" i mean "not even close to full") story line is amazing (hl2 was named "the best game ever made" when it finally dropped.) i suppose the fact that there are only fan theories about what has happened in the world between black mesa and when gordon wakes up on the train heading into city 17 (years later) is a pretty big hurtle to jump when adapting the story. i'm not even sure gordon freeman would even make for a good main character of a film (the man never talks, he's just a theoretical physicist who gets shit done.) while at the same time, if i were to shell out $10 for this imaginary half-life movie i'd want it to be the original story (gordon, black mesa, crowbar, head crabs) and have... i don't know... david lynch directing or something. i remember when my brother came home one day with bootleg copy on half-life when i was like 11, i had nightmare about headcrabs for... shit, i still have nightmares about headcrabs.

trust me, i'm as suprised as you are.

i was first introduced to carson mell's work through the devil in denim shorts (how so is a story i'd rather not get into, but lets say it involves an iphone and one of those types of guys that like to show off their iphones) which carson made for sundance that eventually spurred the book i just finished saguaro: the life and times of bobby allen bird. i loved the shorts (granted i was high as shit) but i didn't initially run out and buy the book; i assumed it was just another campy rock 'n roll story which i'm getting pretty tired of; i pretty much couldn't have been more wrong. it wasn't until i checked out the rest of carson's work on youtube a few weeks later that i ordered the book from his site (i think that's the only place it's available; from what i can tell he's publishing it himself.)

it's a short book; 152 pages... larger text. i read it in 3 sittings (3 chapters at a time) and looking back it was a good way of going about it. this isn't a story loaded full of groupies and trashed hotel rooms, in fact the story has little to do with bobby's music career but more with how his rock success and his more on than off love affair with drugs and alcohol that bore and destroyed many deep relationships through out his better years. it's not far into the first chapter kid bird you realize carson didn't base this story around an old tired image of a rock 'n roll tough guy. even though he does kick a lot of ass in chapter 6 (my favorite chapter.)

you can hear carson read chapter 3 fame here and chapter 4 sara here (it's funny the woman mispronounces the name of the book.) once you hear the story though the voice carson gave bobby, it's hard to shake.

if you'd like to borrow the book once again feel free (but give me a few days, i think i'm going to do a reread.) but if carson gets more support hopefully that sci-fi book he's working on based on his latest shorts will come out soon...

from bikes with scooter geometry to adam22 and all the hate on the internet... well, to be perfectly frank the modern bmx scene is a joke. but after thumbing through my copy of holeshot #4 that delightfully arrived at my door today, i'm really happy that i ride a little kids bike (well... not currently.) the content doesn't run the same parallels as what you'd find in transworld or bmx plus! (you know, 7-11 garbage.) shared stories of cutty spots and the hurtles that were jumped for one chance at it, the gonz (nuff said,) some amazing shots from ted van orman and dirt ron (bay game all star) hitting the home ave ditch. it's all put together by nick ferreira photographer/designer/la-transplant. if you want to borrow my copy just drop me a line, but please help a brother out, for $10 you get a subscription for 3 issues (about a year.) i've come to realize i'd have to be pret-tay pret-tay drunk to say bmx comes anywhere near having universal appeal, but you don't necessarily have to have grown up idolizing taj and joe to get way more than $3 worth of enjoyment from each issue. in a time when print media (especially in bmx) is going through a quick death, holeshot is proving that you can spend all day on message boards and the come up, but nothing really holds up to something tangible. i really hope this type of attitude picks up in bmx, it would be pretty sick if all the 15 year old pricks that are always at the park (one of the better reasons to ride in the morning) started riding real man bikes. maybe kids will stop pumping out self-filmed web vids every other week and spend a little time to make something with an idea behind it, maybe we all can go back to just riding chrome or black rims, maybe i don't need that 21lb bike, maybe i'll look back on all these footjam whips i've been doing on mellow banks and laugh, maybe people will start to appreciate the looks of a 39t race sprocket again, maybe the biggest bmx blog in the world shouldn't be run by a guy who pulled a knife on somebody at the 9th st trails, maybe we should all just go back to pedaling our asses off towards a pallet propped up against a dumpster again...
